Question
What musicians (or style of music) do you consider glorifying to God?
Response
Briefly put, my understanding regarding music as it pertains to the singing of saints is that it is designed to compliment the words being expressed, being supportive of the words and fitting to them, as well as being a carrier of them. Hence the words are to be the issue in the singing as they are an expression of the heart as it responds to the effectual working of God’s word within it, with the music (regardless of what instruments are employed) being solely an accompaniment to the words and respectfully supportive of them, not the other way around. In addition my understanding is that due to the nature and purpose of saints’ singing, (which is the issue of “teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord”), it will not only be for a completely different purpose than the singing of the world, but it will naturally both by its words and style, and also through its musical accompaniment, stand in identifiable contrast to the carnal singing and songs of the world. “Psalms and hymns and spiritual songs” is the style of singing commensurate with godly saints who are concerned with “teaching and admonishing one another” thereby; the style of music that accompanies it naturally should be commensurate with this.
