Question
Regarding the sonship life of the Lord Jesus Christ, I can see in the book of Luke that Christ was adopted at 12 and then begins his ministry at 30. This would suggest that he was entering level three of his sonship education/edification. In light of this, when we speak of him increasing learning, what would this mean? With the New Covenant not being established it would seem that he wasn’t duplicating the sonship education he had received from his father in the 12 or anyone else.
Response
There is too much that I do not understand and appreciate about sonship edification in general, and particularly about its third level, to make any real definitive statement regarding the Lord’s situation. However, I do know that the specific and unique nature of His “Father’s business” that He entered into and was entrusted with fulfilling is the issue that determines not only the curriculum of His sonship education and edification, but also determines the matters about which He would have ‘increased learning’ in the first phase to its third level. This said, I think when He ‘increased learning’ that it especially pertained to what He would specifically do when He confronted apostate Israel, both exposing and dealing with its apostasy and doctrinal corruption; along with what He would do in providing the necessary corrective doctrine and fundamental edification for the believing remnant. Hence, simply put my understanding is that he ‘increased learning’ especially in these two areas, (not exclusively, but especially), and so became equipped by His Father to carry out these two specific preaching and teaching aspects of His Father’s business at that time.
